The LA Jr. Kings have announced that Mark Ferner has been named the club’s 16U AAA head coach for the 2024-25 season.

Ferner brings a wealth of experience behind the Jr. Kings’ bench, including a 16-year professional playing career followed by a 16-year coaching run in the high-level junior ranks.

“Mark is a well-respected and well-connected coach who will surely help elevate our program to another level,” said Jr. Kings general manager Tommy Tartaglione. “His knowledge and passion for the game, coupled with his established success mentoring young players, is second to none.”

Among his many coaching accolades, Ferner guided the British Columbia Hockey League’s (BCHL) Vernon Vipers to three consecutive Canadian Junior A National Championships appearances from 2008-11 - winning two titles - while being named BCHL Coach of the Year twice (2009 and 2010).

“Joining the Jr. Kings - a club that’s taken so much pride over the years nurturing elite-level talent, both on and off the ice - is exciting to say the least,” said Ferner. “As a coach, I preach hard work, accountability and collaboration with the No. 1 goal of developing and exposing our players to high-level junior and NCAA programs across North America.”

A Regina, Saskatchewan, native, Ferner, a defenseman, played three seasons of junior in the Western Hockey League (WHL) before embarking on his professional career that took him through the NHL - he patrolled the blue line for the Buffalo Sabres, Washington Capitals, Anaheim Mighty Ducks and Detroit Red Wings - American Hockey League, International Hockey League, West Coast Hockey League and Europe.

Ferner’s coaching resume also includes tenure as head coach of the WHL’s Everett Silvertips; head and assistant coach with the WHL’s Kamloops Blazers; and assistant for the WHL’s Vancouver Giants. He’s also served as an amateur scout for the Sabres.
